Chloride Compounds in the Trash

It is the objective of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and the resulting European Regulation (EG) 850/2004 (EU Regulation on POPs)
to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants.

At the request of the German Federal Environment Agency, a panel of experts has examined the frequency of these pollutants in garbage, manufactured items, and recycling products. At the same time, the quantities of POPs in trash and recycling materials were estimated.

Based on the results, the authors suggest threshold values and disposal procedures. The goal is to exclude such materials from the recycling process. POPs are not biodegradable and enter the food chain.

The complete study is available for download from the Federal Environment Agency.
