EU States Agree on Restriction of Microplastics

At the end of April, as part of a meeting of the REACH Committee, a majority of the member states of the EU voted for the proposal of the European Commission to restrict microplastics intentionally added to products. If the European Parliament and Council do not raise any objections within the next three months, the proposal will become law.

The EU published the proposal in September 2022 when it modified some points of the ECHA draft. It increased the size of the particles covered; formulated exceptions for numerous uses, including at industrial sites and in medication; and extended the transition period by up to 12 years.
