Focusing on Silicon Compounds

British experts suggest that the EU limit the use of silicon compounds D4 (Cyclotetrasiloxane) and D5 (Cyclopentasiloxane). Both have a long life and accumulate in organisms and are therefore substances of very high concern. This fact triggered the initiative. D4 and D5 are contained in body-care products and ultimately collect in waste water and affect the environment. They are also important basic materials for silicone materials and can be contained in finished products as residues.

The British request is now being discussed in various committees of the ECHA. The German Environmental Ministry (Umweltbundesamt – UBA) expects to reach a position at the beginning of 2016. Because of the particularly concerning properties, the UBA regards listing D4 and D5 in the REACH candidate list as sensible. If the substances are included in the list, it would be a clear signal to manufacturers, importers, and dealers to look for alternatives to these substances.
