Green Guidelines for U.S. Construction Professionals

Clean Production Action (CPA), an American environmental group, has published GreenScreen guidance that aims at greater transparency with building materials. The guidance describes how working with the GreenScreen tool can help estimate the dangerousness of chemicals in building products. It also documents the conditions that a building must meet to be awarded a certificate by the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC).

For example, individual components of the building products being used must be disclosed. Substances of very high concern in building materials must also be avoided.

According to CPA Director Mark Rossi, GreenScreen finally clarifies what chemicals are contained in building products. According to a survey, however, the manufactures involved are more skeptical. Some 60% of the respondents do not feel capable of meeting the stronger criteria that CPA demands.
