Hand and Surface Disinfectants: BAuA Grants Exceptional Permissions

Increased demand for disinfectants makes raw materials scare and creates distress for manufacturers. To avoid having regulations tighten bottlenecks even further, the German Federal Office for Chemicals (Bundesstelle für Chemikalien), a department of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin: BAuA), has granted general rulings and exceptional permissions according to Article 55, Section 1 of the Biocide Regulation.

As early as March 4, the Office published a General Ruling on the Authorization of Biocide Products Containing 2-Propanol for Hygienic Hand Disinfection (German only), which it supplemented on March 13. It was expanded again a week later along with the group of addresses.

On April 2, the BAuA published an additional general ruling (German only) on the “authorization of biocide products containing ethanol, chlorimide-T, and sodium hypochlorite for bottle disinfection.”

On its Web site (German only), the institute lists all the regulations and the option to download a list of FAQs.

The ECHA provides comprehensive information on the topic and the regulations that apply in individual EU states on its COVID-19 site.
