REACH Update for PAH and Phthalates

Appendix XVII of the REACH Regulation (EU) 2015/326 has been amended in terms of aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phthalates. For PAH, a new method for analysis applies as the standard method to determine PAH in extender oils. The method enables more exact determination of PAH concentrations, giving manufacturers greater security.

Extender oils are used in the manufacture of tires and tire parts. Guideline 2005/69/EG forbids the marketing and use of such oils if they contain more than 1mg/kg of carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene or more than 10 mg/kg of a specific mixture of eight different PAHs.
