UK REACH: British Governments Wants to Extend Deadlines for REACH Registrations

The British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) plans to extend registration deadlines and has started a consultation that runs until September 1. The DEFRA is calling for the following new transition deadlines:

October 2026 (previously October 28, 2021–October 28, 2023):

  • For substances that were included on the EU’s REACH Candidate List before UK REACH took effect on December 31, 2020.
  • For substances of very high concern (SVHCs) that are manufactured or imported in a tonnage band greater than one ton per year.
  • For substances that are highly toxic to aquatic organisms and are manufactured or imported in a tonnage band greater than 100 tons per year.
  • For all substances that are manufactured or imported in a tonnage band greater than 1,000 tons per year

October 2027 (previously October 28, 2021–October 28, 2025):

  • For substances that were part of the British REACH Candidate List before the first submission deadline.
  • For all substances manufactured or imported in a tonnage band greater than 100 tons per year

October 2028 (previously October 28, 2021–October 28, 2027):

  • For all substances manufactured or imported in a tonnage band greater than one ton per year.

According to the government’s rational for the extension, the development of a new registration model requires more time. The aim of the model is to keep the costs incurred by companies as low as possible. The transition from EU REACH to UK REACH is expensive for companies because they must now obtain additional data. The government did not state when the new model will be ready.
