UV Filter Under Suspicion

The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), has expressed concern about the safety of a UV filter, methoxypropylamino cyclohexenylidene ethoxyethylcyanoacetate, in cosmetics. The members of the committee admit that the genotoxic potential of the substance cannot be ruled out. They also state that it could lead to skin and eye irritations.

The substance has long been considered safe, if its concentration in a product did not exceed 5%. But the scientists on the SCCS could not confirm its safety in their final opinion. Further studies are needed to resolve the concerns.
