EU Publicizes Action Plan to Make the Chemical Industry More Competitive and Simplify REACH

On January 29, the EU Commission presented its Competitiveness Compass. With this initiative, the EU wants to strengthen the competitiveness of its chemical industry. The central demand: Simplify rules and processes.

Simplification is also the keyword for the planned revision of REACH. The revision aims at creating a reduced bureaucracy and smarter regulations to enable faster decision-making in the future. However, the concrete changes to REACH remain to be seen.

Chemical industry demands action

In principle, the German Chemical Industry Association (Verband der Chemischen Industrie: VCI) welcomes the EU initiative. However, the VCI says that it’s finally time for action. Above all, the VCI criticizes the EU’s insistence on state interventions based on protectionism and subsidies.

New category for smaller companies

To relieve the burden on many companies, the EU plans a new category of small and midsize enterprises. A proposal is expected in February. The reorganization will enable up to 31,000 companies to benefit from simplified rules. For example, the scope of reporting requirements is to be reduced by around 35 percent.
