GHS: UN Publishes GHS Rev. 11

The UN has updated the GHS rules and published the 11th version of the system (GHS Rev. 11). Classification of substances and mixtures that contribute significantly to global warming is one of the new features.

The following have also been updated and/or supplemented:

  • Classification criteria for aerosols and chemicals under pressure
  • Guidelines for classification of skin sensitization using non-animal testing methods
  • Safety instructions
  • A section in Annex 11 to facilitate the identification of simple asphyxiants

Patchwork instead of uniformity

The GHS was developed to introduce worldwide, uniform rules for handling chemicals. But because implementation is voluntary, each country determines for itself which GHS version is authoritative and which requirements apply to specific industries and areas of activity. The result is a patchwork of regulations around the world. The GHS does not live up to its claim of achieving uniformity.

The CLP Regulation is legally binding and directly applicable in EU Member States. Please check whether your documents, such as safety data sheets and labels, comply with the current requirements.
