REACH:
EU considers immediate measures

In view of the protracted REACH revision, the EU is considering taking measures to speed up individual REACH processes. Experts and scientists discussed what these could be at the "Tomorrow's Chemicals Policy: Perspectives and Challenges" conference in Brussels at the end of April.

According to Sylvain Bintein, Team Leader REACH and CLP at the EU Commission's DG Environment, the main aim is to improve the quality of registration dossiers and to adapt restriction and authorization procedures - including the new CLP hazard classes and in such a way that animal testing is avoided as far as possible.

In focus: REACH Regulation, Article 58

One lever for simplifying processes and reducing the ECHA's workload would be to amend Article 58 of the REACH Regulation, for example. This specifies which criteria are decisive for inclusion in the list of substances subject to authorization, i.e. in Annex XIV of the REACH Regulation.

Select fabrics more specifically

If, for example, more information were available on how and to what extent substances are used, assessors could select substances for restriction and authorization lists in a more targeted manner. Priority would then be given to substances with a wider use that pose a higher environmental and health risk. Such prioritization would also relieve the burden on ECHA assessors because they could concentrate on the really important substances.
