Use of SVHC:
Study brings surprising findings
The majority of substances considered to be of very high concern under the REACH regulation can be classified as essential in their application. This was the result of a study by the Department of Environmental Science at Stockholm University.
The figures in detail
Surprisingly, only ten percent of the SVHC uses examined are classified as "non-substantial", while 55 percent are classified as substantial. The use of the remaining 35 percent is complex and therefore belongs to a gray area. This means that the scientists were unable to classify their use as either significant or non-significant.
More clarity required
The result raises doubts as to whether the EU is achieving its goal of further restricting the use of chemicals such as carcinogens, endocrine disruptors and substances with other critical properties and accelerating the restriction of these substances.
In view of the broad gray area, the industry is calling for clearer guidelines on how the concept should be implemented in future legislation.
