Chromium (VI) compounds:
EU wants to extend restrictions
The EU Commission has asked the ECHA to draw up a REACH restriction proposal - not only for chromium trioxide and chromic acid, but for all eleven chromium (VI) compounds currently on the authorization list for substances of very high concern (Annex XIV of the REACH Regulation).
In addition to chromium trioxide and chromic acid (entries 16 and 17 in Annex XIV of the REACH Regulation), these are the compounds
- Sodium dichromate (entry 18)
- Potassium dichromate (entry 19)
- Ammonium dichromate (entry 20)
- Potassium chromate (entry 21)
- Sodium chromate (entry 22)
- Dichromium tris(chromate) (entry 28)
- Strontium chromate (entry 29)
- potassium hydroxyoctaoxodizincate dichromate (entry 30) and
- Pentazinc chromate octahydroxide (entry 31)
Substances that are not yet listed in Annex XIV of the REACH Regulation, such as barium chromate, could also be integrated into the restriction proposal.
With this step, the EU wants to avoid from the outset that the industry switches to these chromium (VI) compounds, a "regrettable substitution", and overwhelms the ECHA with a flood of applications for authorization.
ECHA is to submit the restriction proposal by April 11, 2025.
