CLP Regulation: EU Parliament Approves Postponement of Deadlines for CLP Applications
On October 23, the European Parliament voted to postpone the application deadlines for certain CLP obligations. The deadlines had come into force on December 10, 2024, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2024/2865, but had not yet taken effect. The postponement was obtained under a fast-track procedure, given its urgency.
What’s changing – What’s staying the same
Regulation (EU) 2024/2865 remains valid. The deadlines for various applications are changing. Instead of July 1, 2026 and January 2027, the following obligations must now be implemented from January 1, 2028 onward.
Area Original Date New Date
Relabeling obligations July 1, 2026 January 1, 2028
Layout and format specifications July 1, 2026 January 1, 2028
Advertising and distance selling January 1, 2027 January 1, 2028
Enhanced labeling content January 1, 2027 January 1, 2028
Background
The deadline extension is part of the so-called Omnibus VI Chemicals Package, which the EU published on July 8 of this year. With these measures, the EU wants to simplify legal regulations and reduce the amount of the related bureaucracy. The same goal applies to the CLP Regulation.
The Council must now formally approve the draft law before it can come into force.
