ECHA:
Talc to Be Classified as Probably Carcinogenic
The Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) argues that talc should be classified as carcinogenic (Category 1B) according to the CLP Regulation. Talc would then be considered a substance of very high concern. The call is surprising because the Netherlands had proposed that the substance be classified only as carcinogenic in category 2, which is less strict.
In its finding, the group of experts relied on data from humans and animals derived from various sources of exposure and types of cancer. But the evidence for a carcinogenic effect is nonetheless limited. However, according to a provision in Annex I of the CLP Regulation, the substance can still be classified as a suspected carcinogen for humans even if the evidence is inconclusive.
Far-reaching consequences
Such a classification would have far-reaching consequences for industry because the EU Cosmetics Regulation prohibits the use of carcinogens in categories 1A, 1B, and 2 in cosmetics. Indeed, talc is used in numerous products, such as consumer goods, personal care products, and body powders. The substance is also used as a filler in pharmaceuticals and in the paint and printing ink industries.
