EU Commission:
Deadline extension for PFOA use in fire extinguishing foams is coming
The deadline for the ban on firefighting foams containing PFOA is to be postponed from July 4, 2025 to December 3, 2025. In addition, new concentration limits for unintentional trace impurities are proposed. The EU Commission has published the corresponding draft for consultation. Feedback is possible until December 6.
Background
With this initiative, the EU wants to give the affected companies more time to switch to fluorine-free foams and thus prevent companies from switching to other fluorine-containing substances under time pressure. PFOA and its salts belong to the PFAS group of substances, a group of more than 10,000 substances for which a restriction procedure is currently underway.
Legal regulation via the POP Regulation
PFOA, its salts and PFOA-related compounds were included in Annex A (elimination) of the Stockholm Convention in 2019. The substance is listed in Annex I of the EU POP Regulation.
