Swedish Chemicals Agency:
Prohibited Substances Still Present in Products

Inspectors from the Swedish Chemicals Agency, KEMI, have tested more than 600 products and found banned substances such as the phthalate DEHP, lead, cadmium, and short-chain chlorinated paraffins. And the labels on almost half of the products did not comply with the law. KEMI published a report on the results on December 5.

Altogether, inspectors discovered prohibited substances in 91 of the 607 products examined during the inspection campaign, mainly in items made of soft plastic, in jewelry, and in discount electronics.

Missing CE marking

In addition, KEMI inspectors found that 48 percent of the 607 articles were labeled incorrectly. For example, many of the articles lacked CE marking. Manufacturers use the marking to declare that the product:

  • Meets all applicable European requirements
  • Has passed the appropriate conformity assessment procedures.

Non-marketable products

KEMI has arranged for the withdrawal of the affected products from the market. With these inspections, KEMI aims to raise awareness among supply chain actors of the requirements of the regulations (REACH, POP, and Toys) and directives (RoHS).
