Safety Data Sheets – EU Plans New Assessments

As part of a new EU implementation project, REACH-EN-FORCE-11 (REF 11), national agencies will inspect submissions from 2023 onward to determine if companies have implemented the new requirements for safety data sheets (SDS) according to Regulation (EU) 2020/878. The ECHA reported on the project in a press release.

Complete and regularly updated SDS should inform all companies in the supply chain about hazardous chemicals and mixtures. Nevertheless, according to ECHA, the quality of the SDS continues to leave a great deal to be desired. As early as 2013, agency inspections that were part of REACH-EN-FORCE-2 determined that more than half of the documents did not meet legal requirements.

Regulation (EU) 2020/878 has been in force since the beginning of this year. It requires that SDS meet the new requirements for content and format by December 31, 2022.
