Canada Extends Deadline for Implementation of GHS

Canada has extended the transition deadline for manufacturers and importers to comply with the new GHS regulations from June 1, 2017 to June 1, 2018. Companies now have more time to adapt their safety data sheets and labels to the new requirements. The regulations were updated in 2015 and are defined in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

Overall, the transition to WHMIS 2015 should occur in steps. After implementation of this new deadline for manufacturers and importers, a new deadline will be extended to distribution partners and vendors (from June 2018 to September 2018).

The Canadian health ministry, Health Canada, has published technical guidelines to support companies. You can read about them in our blog entries Canada Issues Guidelines for GHS Requirements and GHS: Canada Issues Part II of Its Technical Guidance.
