EU Publishes Fifteenth ATP of the CLP Regulation

The fifteenth adaptation to technical and scientific progress (ATP) of the CLP Regulation was published on August 11 in the Official Journal of the European Union (2020 L 261/2) and takes effect on August 31, 2020.

With Regulation 2020/1182, the EU modifies Annex VI, Part 3, of the CLP Regulation  1272/2008. It applies as of March 1, 2022, but chemicals and mixtures may be classified, labeled, and packaged according to the modified requirements before that date.

Annex VI contains the list of harmonized classifications and labeling of hazardous chemicals. Upon the recommendation of the ECHA Risk Assessment Committee (RAC), the classifications and labeling for a variety of chemicals were updated, added, or removed. The changes included frequently used chemicals like nitric acid and silicon carbide fibers.

The Committee did not include lead massive (particle diameter ≥ 1 mm). The experts on the RAC are currently developing a revised opinion on this form of lead based on new scientific data.

And new scientific data is also available for 2-Butoxyethanol (CAS Number 111-76-2). Here too, the RAC is examining whether the hazard class of “Acute Toxicity, Harmful by Inhalation” is appropriate. The existing classification will not be changed until the study is complete.
