EU Restricts the Use and Placing on the Market of Cyclosiloxanes

The EU has published Regulation 2024/1328 and amended the list of restricted substances enumerated in Annex XVII of REACH 1907/2006. The EU thus restricts the use and placing on the market of three cyclosiloxanes: Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclo-penta siloxane (D5), and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6). The restriction comes into force on June 6, 2026.

Accordingly, D4, D5, and D6 may no longer be placed on the market after this deadline:

  • As a substance on its own
  • As a constituent of other substances
  • In mixtures in a concentration equal to or greater than 0,1 % by weight of the respective substance

Exemptions and extended deadlines (from 2027 to 2034) apply for individual uses.

Thanks to their useful properties, D4, D5, and D6 are used to produce silicone polymers used in a wide range of industries, including the:

  • Automotive industry
  • Construction industry
  • Electrical and electronics industry, including the construction of solar panels and wind turbines
  • Semiconductor industry
  • Defense and aerospace industries
  • Medical device manufacturing
