Obama Signs U.S. Chemical Act

The new U.S. Chemical Act replaces the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) that applied for 40 years and that has not been changed in all these years. In the context of a signing ceremony, President Obama spoke of an important law. For the first time, authorities can effectively regulate the handling of chemicals. Gina McCarthy, the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also spoke positively about the law. She characterized the revised law, the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) as an important precondition for the protection of public health.

Yet when the law goes into effect, it will put pressure on agencies. Authorities must evaluate all the substances on the market in light of the new safety standards within a tight timeframe and remove substances regarded as dangerous from the market within the same period.
