South Korea Expands List of Preregistered Substances

In mid-April, the South Korean Environmental Ministry published the current version of the list of preregistered existing substances. The list now includes some 17,380 substances.

Existing substances are those that were in use before July 2019. The list gives companies access to data such as the number of preregistered companies for each substance, the annual manufactured or imported quantity, information on hazardous properties, and if the substance is intended for consumers.

Manufacturers and/or importers of existing substances must meet the following registration deadlines if they wish to continue to manufacture or import the substances.

  • By 2024: Substances manufactured or imported in a quantity between 100 and 1,000 tons
  • By 2027: Substances manufactured or imported in a quantity between 10 and 100 tons
  • By 2030: Substances manufactured or imported in a quantity between one and ten tons

In 2021, the deadline expired for substances manufactured or imported in quantities greater than 1,000 tons per year and for carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reprotoxic (CMR) substances in a tonnage band greater than one.
