Faulty Product Labeling

Every third consumer product that contains hazardous substances is labeled incorrectly. That’s the finding of the Norwegian Environmental Agency in an examination of various products – sporting good, foodstuffs, electronics, and building materials:

• 22 did not list ingredients at all
• 15 did not have labels in Norwegian
• 34 provided the required pictograms in printing that was too small
• 13 had labels that did not indicate the responsible corporation

The new CLP rules that came into force in June 2015 were the trigger for the examination. The Agency has announced additional inspections for the remainder of the transition period, which ends in June 2017.

We recommend companies align the labeling of their products with the new CLP rules in good time. We would also note our two-day seminar (February 3–4) on the classification and labeling of substances and mixtures according to the CLP Regulation (in German only). The seminar includes practical exercises. You can find more details here.
