Presence of Harmful Chemicals with Hormone‐Like Effects Confirmed in Children’s Urine

In the context of analytical studies, U.S. researchers have found various harmful chemicals in children’s urine, including Bisphenol A, Triclosan, matabolites of DEHP, various parabens, and 4‐Nonylphenol (4NP), which has hormone‐like effects.

Three of four of the children examined had confirmed quantities of at least eight of these substances in their urine. The scientists found that more than a quarter of the children showed the presence of 4NP, which so far has been studied too little. According to the researchers, the substance is more widespread than previously assumed, and more studies are urgently needed. The ECHA has made the same request to enable reliable evaluation of the hazards posed by the substance. Due to present results the ECHA characterized 4NP as a substance of very high concern (SVHC).

Nonylphenols are primarily used in the manufacture of nonylphenol ethoxylates, ingredients in nonionic tenside laundry and cleaning products. As the values measured would indicate, 4NP is identified as a contaminant in polymers and resins and thus ends up in the environment.
