Textile Chemicals: EU Proposes Fast Track

As quickly as possible, the EU Commission wants to restrict the use of carcinogens, mutagens, and reprotoxic chemicals of Category 1A and 1B that are frequently found in consumer textiles like clothing, towels, draperies, and carpets. Experts at the EU Commission, the ECHA, and various national agencies have collaborated on a list of 291 substances that pose a particular danger to health, including phthalates, flame retardants, and pigments.

According to the EU commission, chemicals in textiles are a particular problem because people are exposed to them for especially lengthy periods. That’s why the EU Commission wants to fast-track their prohibition according to REACH Article 68(2) and include the list as Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation.

Representatives of KEMI, the Swedish environmental agency, see these measures as long overdue. They insist the fast-track procedure be applied to all substances of very high concern that are found in consumer articles.
