Database on Animal Experiments

The third amendment of the Protection of Animals Act stipulates that the public be informed about all approved animal experiments in Germany. To that end, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung) has developed the AnimalTestInfo database. The database is also available now to other European countries.

The database lists all planned animal experiments in Germany. It also contains information on the purpose of the experiments and their effects on animal health. Additional information is provided on number and species of the animals used and on how animal experiments can be minimized.

In the European Union, some 12 million animals are used each year for scientific experiments – including 3 million in Germany. The amendment of the Protection of Animals Act is aimed at substituting other methods for animal experiments whenever possible, minimizing the number of animals involved in experiments, and limiting the suffering of the animals to the greatest extent possible.
