ECHA Pushes Alternative Test Methods

In the future, registrants must state more clearly if animal tests are truly necessary for a specific safety assessment of substances and the reasons why other test methods were not considered.

The move comes in response to a demand of the European ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly, to do more to protect animals.

In a statement, ECHA Director Geert Dancet emphasized that animal tests are to be avoided whenever an alternative is scientifically justified.

UK representatives of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA UK), an animal-rights group, see the measures as long overdue, given that many animals will suffer before the REACH deadline of 2018.
